Welcome, or welcome back to Elly’s Diary‘s May Book Club Challenge on Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.
I hope everyone has finished the book by now, and has enjoyed reading it as much as I did. Wasn’t it so good? I loved all the twist and turns…and to be honest I wasn’t expecting the third chapter to go in the direction it went…
I believe the book is thought provoking, intellectually challenging, and incredibly relevant to today’s society. However I hate, hate, HATE open finales.
I don’t know what it is that triggers me to despise open endings so much, but honestly, I really wish I knew what happened after the aerial bombardment, and I’d love to know if someone survived it, and if the war shifted people’s perspective on life. Have Montag and Faber ever met again? Were books rewritten? Has intellectual freedom been reestablished? So many questions…and no answer provided.
REVIEW
Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 is a compelling narration of a dystopian future. A future in which society seeks ‘peace and happiness’ through censorship and intellectual dictatorship. Guy Montag is our filter into this universe, a world in which questioning is forbidden, and in which firemen burn people’s houses, if their inhabitants dare as much as to possess a book. Enemies and friends are hard to distinguish, certainties are inexistent. Montag’s journey is that of realisation that material emptiness is nothing in comparison to intellectual and spiritual void.
This book has got me questioning on how close or far away we are from this dystopian future. Of course, most of us are lucky enough to live in a society in which intellectual freedom is paramount. But what do we chose as individuals? What do we seek with our choices? Are we more or less consciously choosing for conformity with every choice we make?

OMG, I didn’t know you did a book club!! I love book clubs.
I have not read this book but because of your review, honestly, I don’t think I would read it. Because , like you, I strongly dislike open endings. I like some closure a the end–whether happy or sad–I want to know! Thanks for the review and I will definitely be back to check out more reviews, because I am a total bookworm.

I’ve only read Ray Bradbury’s short stories before, but I’ve been meaning to give Fahrenheit 451 a read for ages — I definitely will now! Thanks so much for sharing!! x
